Behind the Mountain, the Fern Rises" (後山蕨起) is a local revitalization initiative that integrates Truku (Taroko) indigenous culture, natural landscapes, and youth innovation. Located in the Hualien Rift Valley, the site is just a 15-minute drive from Hualien Train Station—conveniently accessible, yet surrounded by untouched natural beauty.
The area features stunning rice paddies known as the “Mirror of the Sky,” where the water reflects the mountains and sky at dawn and dusk, creating breathtaking scenery. Within the park, bamboo walkways inspired by Kyoto’s Arashiyama Bamboo Grove offer a serene forest experience.
Centered around the native edible fern Diplazium esculentum (mountain vegetable), the project combines local cultivation, processing, and product innovation to develop unique industries rooted in Truku cultural identity. Creative fusion dishes using indigenous ingredients bring the flavor of the land and culture to every plate.
The initiative promotes immersive cultural tourism through guided tours, hands-on experiences, foraging, and indigenous cooking workshops, offering visitors a deep connection to the land and people. At the same time, it supports youth returning home, skill transfer, and cultural sustainability, revitalizing the community and empowering it to thrive with pride.
This is more than just an industrial project—it is a dialogue between culture and land, where every visitor can witness the strength and hope of the indigenous homeland.
